How to Style Flared Leggings: Gym to Street

Woman styling black flared leggings from gym to street at golden hour

Flared leggings are the rare gym purchase that earns its place outside the gym. Fitted where leggings should be fitted, open from the knee so they drape like a pant. Here is how to get the fit right and four ways to wear them.

Get the fit right first

The flare should skim the top of your shoe, not drag under your heel. If you are between lengths, size for the shoes you wear most: full length over trainers, 7/8 if you live in slides or low profile sneakers. High waisted styles anchor the silhouette, and a crossover or V waistband sharpens it.

Four outfit formulas

1. The session fit. Flares, fitted crop or sports bra, oversized tee over the top until the working sets. Low profile trainers so the flare sits clean.

2. Coffee after. Same flares, fitted long sleeve or bodysuit, chunky sneaker, hair claw. This is the fit flared leggings were invented for.

3. Travel day. Flares in a darker colour, oversized jumper, slides for the plane and sneakers in the bag. Comfortable for hours, still looks deliberate.

4. Dinner but make it comfortable. Black flares read as pants in low light. Fitted top, jacket with structure, boot with a small heel so the hem floats.

Colour strategy

Start with black, it does everything. Charcoal and almond are the second pair. The crossover and V scrunch versions add shape if a plain flare feels flat on you.
